Day 1: San Diego to Madrid

I never thought this day would come... and I have no idea how I am still awake. The four of us woke up at 6:30am PST on June 29th and were shuttled to the airport by my wonderful parents, and somehow here I am still standing at 9:55PM Madrid time on June 30th. Here is what is left of the others...

The flight wasn't bad. I thought I hated flying... but I think it was all in my head ever since I puked my brains out next to Kelly Braden on my 8th Grade field trip to Washington DC. I kept myself busy by snapping over 400 pictures out the window! I'm officially obsessed with my camera. Here is my favorite from the flight as we went up the East Coast and into the Atlantic.

We finally arrived to Madrid just before noon and got checked into our hotel by 1PM. We are staying at The Westin Palace, which actually happens to be the #1 rated hotel in all of Madrid, thank God for travelzoo. Here are some pics of the digs... the place was built in 1912 and we are out of place with all the ritzy folks but we are diggin the attention.

So since today was such an intense travel day we decided to just get our brains and bodies back together. Ambien and the flight had taken a toll on us all. We walked the city, talked to locals, ate the food, and wandered searching for a massage for our ailing bodies. I was the only one to make it long enough to see it. Oh not to mention we had probably the most potent but also delicious margaritas I have ever seen, no Margarita mix in these parts. Off of just two drinks we were all feeling like college freshmen all over again.

Here is a pic of us at our favorite grubbery and also a pic of my delicious Tapa de tamera asada...

The boys passed out pretty early today so I decided to venture out on my own and snap a few more pics. The people I've encountered so far are unreasonably pleasant and willing to help you even if they don't speak English. Tomorrow we venture out for a major sight seeing day so stay tuned!
